Beetroot has been used for many centuries as a medicine as it contains minerals that help to prevent infection.

An old fashioned product, cooked beetroot has many uses. It is sweet flavoured and should be deep red in colour.

Preparation and Use

Beetroot is ideal used in salads or cooked in soup or chutney.

At home, store beetroot in the fridge and ensure any spillage is cleaned up straight away as this could cause staining.

Health and Nutrition

5 a Day - 7 slices or 3 whole "baby" beetroot counts as 1 portion towards 5 a day.

Beetroot are rich in potassium, and have only 36 calories per 100g. They have the highest sugar content of any vegetable and are said to stimulate the immune system.
