Basil
Basil has large green leaves with a distinctive smell. It originated in India, South East Asia and the Pacific islands.
Basil belongs to the mint family, and was used in both ancient Egypt and Greece.
Basil has a slightly peppery taste and is widely used in Italian cooking.
Preparation and Use
Basil goes well with tomatoes and in Italian cooking. It is also great with peppers or ripped up on top of pizza.
When using Basil rip the leaves instead of cutting as this can cause discolouring. Also, ripping the leaves helps to release the flavour into the food.
Health and Nutrition
Basil is said to calm the nervous system and as a result its oil is used in aromatherapy for clearing the mind and relaxation purposes.
